To make a large or small jar of pickles you can cut the pickle recipes ingredients or make several different types of pickles using the same general ingredients for homemade pickles. If you like to drink pickle juice and judge your pickles harshly you may want to try the pickle juice with a spoon before adding it to the cucumbers in the jar. Ingredients needed below to make pickles is listed with photos to show what you need to make homemade pickles from scratch. 1 DL of Vinegar 6dl water 5 TSP Salt 2 TSP Sugar 1 or 2 batches of dill *cut a little as seen in photo below* 3 large or medium Jalapeno Peppers *cut in slices as seen in photo below* (optional for hotter) 1 or 2 large cucumbers
You can add a few onion slices, green peppers and or garlic if you want it to taste a bit more spiced up with a different flavor. Instead of green peppers, onion & garlic I made it more simple and hotter. I cut up 3 Jalapeno Peppers to add the hot pickle flavor similar to the Van Holten Hot Pickles I love. I cut the the cucumbers kind of thin to cut the time in half for pickles to have to sit in the juice and be pickled. I also cut the jalapeno peppers up and put 3 thick slices in to boil with the water, salt, vinegar, sugar and half a batch of dill. You do not have to put any of the peppers and dill in to boil but, if you drink pickle juice you may like to try it that way with part of the dill and peppers. Picture below shows 1 batch of pickles I let some of dill, red peppers, jalapeno peppers and few slices of online boil in with the rest of the ingredients.

Boil the Vinegar, water, salt & sugar for 5 minutes then let it cool just a little before you put it in a glass jar to cover the cut or non cut cucumbers, dill and peppers. You can add water to make them a bit less strong & may want to try the pickle juice to be sure it is to your liking before you cap the pickle jar. Put the pickle jar in a semi cool & dark place like a closet and let it sit for a few days to a week. If you do not cut the cucumbers for the pickle recipe you may need to let it sit and pickle for a couple weeks before you open the jar. It will start to look more like pickles than cucumbers when they are ready but, in sliced pickles they can be ready fast. It took only a couple days for my pickles to be ready to eat. For more crispy pickles keep the slices thicker. An acquired taste there for the long missed and loved hot pickles from the usa. I missed the taste of hot pickle juice and hot pickles made by Van Holten so in Sweden I went out to the Swedish stores to get the ingredients needed to make pickles that taste like Van Holten Pickles. If the hot pickles do not make your mouth feel like it is on fire and the juice does not taste super hot what good is the hot pickle making eh grin. I got pretty close to that Van Holten Pickle taste but, of course only Van Holten can perfect it.
As kid I used to love the sour dills or Heinz Genuine Dill Pickles as they were back in the late 70's and even early 80's but on day the Heinz Pickles took a change in taste. Still very good pickles but, the Pickle Juice and Dill Pickles lost a bit of the dill and sour taste. To me it made my mouth water less for the once loved Heinz Dill Pickle taste.
